An urban regeneration scheme for central Hitchin, Tigg + Coll put together a proposal that looks at fully utilizing the full extent of the site as a high-density new development to include new retail and residential provisions. The proposed scheme of circa 75000sqft GIA containing 80 residential units, amenity space, associated retail elements and car parking. The design looked to create a series of cloisters around which the development wraps and are threaded together by a pedestrian seam. Traditional facing materials are proposed in keeping with the surrounding historic conservation area however using a cross-laminated timber cross-section panel system as a frame to suit the demands of the site. Roof spaces are exaggerated and varying in reference to traditional domestic forms to allow these also to be used a residential dwellings.
