Northchurch Road

The redesign of this existing townhouse in De Beauvoir, Hackney includes the expansion of the lower ground floor to the rear, and ground floor to the side of the host property.

The client’s brief was to create improved family living provision by rationalising the plan within the property, to better connect spaces and open them out to better suit modern life. This included the reconfiguration of access to the second floor, replacement of the existing garage and side extension to create additional bedroom space on the ground floor, a rear extension to create open plan living on the lower ground, and integration of the house and garden through good design. The intention for a contemporary rear extension and lower ground floor is balanced by a desire to retain the traditional character of the existing property externally and internally.

The new lower ground floor elevation will be formed by a combination of pocket sliding and openable pivot glazed doors, the rhythm of which is determined from the dimensions of the host property. In between the glazed units, textured stone panels will be introduced to help break up the rear elevation. The Portland stone panels provide a contemporary take on the colours and layering of the existing brickwork. These panels will be read both internally and externally, seeking to unify the interior and exterior spaces further.
