Elgin Crescent

The purchase of a dilapidated West London property brought the need for urgent updating and an opportunity for expansion to suit a young, growing family

We were commissioned to consider a new basement extension and refurbishment proposal. The main challenge was to consider how the new elements can create a link back to the existing home, both functionally and aesthetically. Bright painted exposed steelwork is being used to emphasise and frame the view into the garden. The proposed stepped landscaping of the rear garden plays a key factor in allowing the new lower ground floor to breathe; reading as a bright yet secluded indoor-outdoor space.

A critical aspect was how to get daylight to penetrate deep into the house, which was achieved but creating a visual link right down into the basement snug from the entrance at ground floor.
