Tigg Coll Architects have been approached by a client, to come up with proposals for a new build three bedroom cottage within a site that has previously been used as a horse arena, but is now redundant.
The client owns and eventing business, which trains, buys and sells horses to compete in Eventing competitions. The business operates out of Dassett Fields, and employs several local people who live in staff accommodation on site. The workers stay in a single storey block which is fully occupied.
The new house is positioned on a slightly raised section of open land within a forested area near to a Grade II* listed property. Despite this site being slightly raised above the rest of the farmstead, the proposal still sits in a scale with the historic outbuildings. The combination of the pitched roof form, small eaves overhang, the wall height, and the full height openings ensure that the design reads as part of the same language as the barn, and particularly the stables, meaning it does not feel out of place in their company.
