Tigg + Coll Architects overhauled the main entrance and amenity spaces to Chapter Spitalfields student accommodation. The scheme includes an elegant new entrance lobby and reception with a range of spaces for students to socialise and study, including a new feature bar and auditorium for events.
The new interior scheme adds a rich palette of colour which takes clues from the surrounding area of Spitalfields and its rich Victorian industrial heritage of the silk industry in the nearby Fornier street, with its multi-coloured entrance doors and detailed porticos. Block colours are added throughout the common areas, layered with more intricate wall panelling detailing, which weaves the spaces together and ties the joinery and finishes together into a holistic design. Curved walls and joinery have been inserted into the existing spaces to create softer spaces for students to meet, study or relax.
The existing interiors were looking tired and dark, with an uninviting entrance and unclear wayfinding. Tigg + Coll added a fresh, contemporary palette of materials to the interiors, giving an increased sense of arrival into the building. A simple palette of materials was used, with split-block colour applied to the walls which runs through the building, tying the different spaces together, broken up with vertical strips of ribbed timber detailing to frame built-in booth seating and joinery; at the same time increasing the sense of space within the double-height space. Elegant brass feature lighting was selected, to bring a sense of luxury to the scheme. Contemporary FFE is Specified throughout, making sure the spaces feel comfortable and homely whilst maintaining a sense of luxury suited to the Chapter brand.
