Campden Grove

The purchase of a dilapidated west London property brought the need for urgent updating and an opportunity for expansion to suit a young, growing family.

The aim was to combine and enhance the original features and character of the property with new contemporary additions to bring a sense of playfulness and expression to the home. The new additions of a basement level to the property with front light well and the extensive reworking to the rear at ground, first and second floor had to be done in a conservation area where the materiality of the existing largely defined the form of the extensions. However we were keen to find playfulness in expressing the structure of the extension and as a result this became the key visual identity that linked all the living spaces together. The new fireplace to the living room follows this vain of using contemporary materiality with a concrete cantilever plinth supporting the hearth.
