We are pleased to announce Bayswater College has been shortlisted for the FX International Design Awards 2019 in the 'Graphics & Wayfinding' category.
The refurbishment of Bayswater College on Queensway was completed in June. The college has now launched their new brand and is welcoming new students from around the world. Our design is based on the brand colours, which we used in the stairwell to create a strong visual link between floors and inject colour into the building. The client chose to expand on our concept images for the stairwell and entrance spaces with graffiti art graphics to accent the spaces, these graphics give much-needed signage which was missing from the building previously.
The existing terrazzo staircase, previously hidden by carpet, has been painstakingly refurbished and repaired to its former glory. Part of which was completed in house by Acumen Building Contracts, the contractor engaged in the project. Areas of the existing parquet flooring in the communal spaces has also been uncovered and restored, hinting to the buildings mid-century origin. We chose to accent these communal spaces with mid-century furniture and lighting, again referring back to the building's beginnings.
The reception space was the focus of the most intensive refurbishment. We reconfigured the space to separate public and private, creating a generous student area with a variety of spaces- study, informal meetings and lounge with an open office to the administration office behind the new reception desk. More graffiti art welcomes and directs students around the space, allowing for opportunities for photographs of friends, events and class graduations.
The communal areas have been well-received by the client and students, giving a space to chat and make connections, one of the main requirements of the clients brief. New windows were fitted to the whole building, giving vital acoustic and thermal protection while also helping to create a smart façade. The classrooms now each have an interactive TV, blinds for shading and working air conditioning, something which has vastly improved the student’s experience!
